Fairmont, WV August 27, 2010—Backbone Security, the global leader in digital steganography detection tools, is pleased to announce availability of a Steganography Detection Policy (SDP) for enterprises protected by Fidelis Security Systems’ flagship session-level network security solution, Fidelis XPS™. The SDP gives Fidelis XPS’ customers the capability to detect insiders downloading digital steganography applications on their networks. Steganography is a method of concealing the existence of data by hiding it within, or appending it to, another file. Unlike encrypting data the way cryptography does, steganography hides the very existence of the data in such a way that it is undetectable under traditional traffic-pattern analysis. Steganography is most often used for malicious purposes such as stealing information or concealing criminal or terrorist activity. The SDP is based on hash values of file artifacts (“fingerprints”) associated with over 850 steganography applications in the Steganography Application Fingerprint Database (SAFDB) developed in Backbone’s Steganography Analysis and Research Center. SAFDB is the world’s largest commercially available hash set exclusive to digital steganography applications and can be used to determine whether files entering or leaving an enterprise network can be associated with a particular digital steganography application or other data-hiding application. “With this policy, Fidelis XPS customers can counter the growing threat from insider use of steganography to steal sensitive information such as PHI, PII, or other sensitive information including intellectual property.” said Jim Wingate, Vice President of Backbone and Director of the SARC. The SDP is available on a monthly or annual subscription basis. Customers can import the policy directly into Fidelis XPS’ CommandPost™ management console, and then distribute the policy to all, or selected, Fidelis XPS sensors. For additional information, please visit http://www.sarc-wv.com/products/fidelis.aspx. For SDP subscription pricing, please contact the SARC at 877.560.SARC (877.560.7272) or email sarc@backbonesecurity.com. About

Backbone’s Digital Steganography Database Exceeds 850 Applications Fairmont, WV August 3, 2010—Backbone Security is pleased to announce the release of Version 3.6 of their Steganography Application Fingerprint Database (SAFDB) which now contains more than 850 steganography applications. Developed in Backbone’s Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC), SAFDB is the world’s largest commercially available hash set exclusive to digital steganography applications. The database is widely used by US and international government and law enforcement agencies; the intelligence community; and private sector digital forensic examiners and network security professionals to detect digital steganography applications on seized digital media or in the inbound or outbound network traffic stream. Discovery of a steganography application during a digital forensics examination is a strong indication the application has been, or will be, used to conceal evidence of criminal activity. Detecting a steganography application in the inbound network traffic stream is a strong indication an insider will use the application to steal sensitive information. SAFDB is an integral part of the Steganography Analyzer Artifact Scanner, or StegAlyzerAS, a digital forensics application, and the Steganography Analyzer Real-Time Scanner (StegAlyzerRTS), a network security appliance that detects the presence or use of steganography in real-time in the network traffic stream. Existing customers may download updated versions of StegAlyzerAS and StegAlyzerRTS that contains SAFDB V3.6 by logging into their account on the SARC website. For additional information about Backbone’s steganalysis tools, please visit www.sarc-wv.com or send email to sarc@backbonesecurity.com. About the SARC The SARC was established to create and maintain a national repository of digital steganography applications, fingerprints, and signatures that can be used during forensic examination of seized digital storage media or when monitoring network traffic for malicious insider behavior. The Steganography Application Fingerprint Database (SAFDB) is the world’s largest database exclusive to digital steganography applications. About Backbone Security In addition to being the leading provider of digital steganalysis tools, Backbone is a Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) Approved Scanning Vendor (ASV) that conducts automated PCI-DSS compliance assessments with their industry leading One-Stop PCI Scan service. Backbone also provides real-time intrusion monitoring, vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, and business continuity and disaster recovery planning services. Contact: Jim

Fairmont, WV June 24, 2010—Backbone Security is pleased to announce availability of 32-bit and 64-bit versions of their popular digital steganography detection tools for use on forensic workstations running 64-bit operating systems. The new versions of the tools can run under Windows XP Pro x64, Windows Vista x64, and Windows 7 x64 and is in line with the growing evolution toward 64-bit forensic workstations. As applications continue demanding more memory and file sizes in general continues to grow, the memory limitation of 4GB for 32-bit platforms is becoming more painful to endure. Accordingly, more and more forensic examiners are migrating to 64-bit platforms as their high end forensic workstations. StegAlyzerAS™ detects the fingerprints (hash values) of file and registry artifacts associated with more than 800 steganography applications. StegAlyzerSS™ detects the signatures of more than 50 of those applications and provides an automated extraction capability, a “point-click-and-extract” interface”, for a growing number of those applications. These tools were developed in Backbone’s Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC) and are widely used by US and international law enforcement agencies; the intelligence community; and private sector computer forensic examiners to detect the presence or use of steganography applications on seized digital media. This capability was made possible through the use of 64-bit image mounting and auto detection technology provided by Paraben Corporation. About

Backbone Security Teams with Fidelis Security Systems to Provide Further Defense-In-Depth for Evolving Cyber Threats
Steganography is a method of concealing the existence of date by hiding it within another file. Unlike encrypting data the way cryptography does, steganography hides the very existence of the data in such a way that it is undetectable under traditional traffic-pattern analysis. Steganography is most often used for malicious purposes such as stealing information or concealing criminal or terrorist activity. Steganography applications are used to hide information in a file by appending it to, or embedding it within, another file. Through this partnership and technology integration, Fidelis' flagship session-level network security solution, Fidelis XPS(TM), will be capable of analyzing and detecting steganography applications through Backbone's Steganography Application Fingerprint Database (SAFDB). SAFDB is the world's largest commercially available hash set exclusive to digital steganography applications and can be used to determine whether files traversing the network can be associated with a particular digital steganography or other data-hiding application. Developed in Backbone's Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC), SAFDB contains seven different fingerprints, or hash values, of each file artifact associated with all 812 digital steganography applications in the database. The joint solution will consist of a set of Fidelis XPS profiles or "fingerprints" derived from SAFDB. Fidelis XPS customers will be able to license the fingerprint set directly from Backbone Security on a subscription basis "With our data set, Fidelis XPS customers have the capability to counter the growing threat from insider use of steganography to exfiltrate sensitive information." said Jim Wingate, Vice President of Backbone and Director of the SARC. "We are excited to be working with the experts in Fidelis Security Systems who are leading the way in deploying next-generation network security solutions to detect malicious insiders attempting to use steganography to steal sensitive information." Backbone Announces Partnership with Paraben
Corporation Fairmont, WV April 19, 2010—Backbone Security, the global leader for digital steganography detection tools, is pleased to announce their partnership with Paraben Corporation. Backbone will utilize Paraben’s virtual image mounting technology commonly known as P2 eXplorer in the steganography detection tools developed in Backbone’s Steganography Analysis & Research Center (SARC). With P2 eXplorer, digital forensics examiners using either the Steganography Analyzer Artifact Scanner (StegAlyzerAS) or Steganography Analyzer Signature Scanner (StegAlyzerSS) tool can mount forensic images and explore them as though the image was a drive on the examiner’s forensic workstation while preserving the forensic nature of the evidence. In fact, P2 eXplorer is one of the only programs that mount images as both logical and physical disks. This means all the deleted, slack, and unallocated space is accessible. An image isn't just mounted to view logical files; it is mounted as an actual bit-stream image, preserving unallocated, slack, and deleted data. Fairmont, West Virginia—March 12, 2010 – Backbone Security is pleased to announce availability of the next generation of their network security appliance for detecting steganography in real-time. The Steganography Analyzer Real-time Scanner, StegAlyzerRTS, developed in Backbone’s Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC) is the only commercially available real-time steganography detection system in the world. The latest generation of StegAlyzerRTS is capable of operating on networks with throughput of 100Mbps. Digital steganography is an Internet era version of an information hiding technique that dates back to the days of Ancient Greece. Using digital steganography, a file can be embedded within, or appended to, another file in such a way that it cannot be seen or heard. Unlike cryptography, which translates information into an unintelligible sequence of letters and numbers, steganography conceals the very existence of the information. The economic downturn has caused many insiders to become acutely aware of the value of the information they work with on a day-to-day basis. Information has become more valuable than money. Once spent, money is gone but information can be resold many times on the burgeoning black market for nearly any type of information. One result of the economic downturn is that insider theft of sensitive information is increasing at an alarming pace. Insiders can use any of the 1,000+ steganography applications available on the Internet as freeware or shareware to steal personal identification information or intellectual property, for example. The current generation of network security appliances does not detect insider use of steganography. StegAlyzerRTS detects insiders downloading any of the 768 digital steganography applications currently in the SARC’s archives. Detecting this type of insider activity is an early warning indicator the insider is planning to steal sensitive information. The system also has the capability to detect insiders using selected steganography applications through a unique signature-based detection model. StegAlyzerRTS is available for $14,995.00 from Backbone Security and our business partners worldwide (international reseller pricing may vary).
