World’s Largest Digital Steganography Database Expands Again

SAFDB Now Contains 1,025 Applications

Fairmont, WV February 1, 2012Backbone Security is pleased to announce the release of the latest version of their Steganography Application Fingerprint Database (SAFDB) which now contains 1,025 steganography applications.

Developed in Backbone’s Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC), SAFDB is the world’s largest commercially available hash set exclusive to digital steganography applications.

The database is widely used by US and international government and law enforcement agencies, the intelligence community, and private sector digital forensic examiners and network security professionals to detect digital steganography applications on seized digital media and within inbound and outbound network traffic streams.

Discovery of a steganography application during a digital forensics examination is a strong indication the application has been, or will be, used to conceal evidence of criminal activity. Detecting a steganography application in the inbound network traffic stream is a strong indication an insider will use the application to steal sensitive information.

SAFDB is an integral part of the Steganography Analyzer Artifact Scanner (StegAlyzerAS), a digital forensics application, and the Steganography Analyzer Real-Time Scanner (StegAlyzerRTS), a network security appliance that detects the presence or use of steganography in the inbound and outbound network traffic stream in real-time.

Backbone Security Announces Enhanced Insider Threat Detection Capability
Network Security Appliance Detects 960 Steganography Applications in Real-Time

Fairmont, West Virginia—September 21, 2011Backbone Security is pleased to announce availability of a new and improved version of their Steganography Analyzer Real-Time Scanner, StegAlyzerRTS, the world’s only commercially available network security appliance for detecting digital steganography in real-time.

Digital steganography is an Internet era version of an information hiding technique dating back to the days of Ancient Greece. Using digital steganography, a file can be embedded within, or appended to, another file in such a way that it cannot be seen or heard. Unlike cryptography, which translates information into an unintelligible sequence of letters and numbers, steganography conceals the very existence of the information.

Insiders are increasingly becoming aware of the value of information they work with on a daily basis. Accordingly, insider theft of sensitive information is increasing at an alarming pace. Insiders can use any of the 1,000+ steganography applications available on the Internet as freeware or shareware to ex-filtrate personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), or intellectual property, for example, outside the enterprise network. The current generation of network security appliances does not detect insider use of steganography.

StegAlyzerRTS Version 3.2, developed in Backbone’s Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC), detects insiders downloading any of the 960 digital steganography applications currently in the SARC’s library of steganography applications. Detecting this type of insider activity is an early warning indicator the insider is planning to steal sensitive information.

Using the analytical approach to detecting steganography developed in the SARC, StegAlyzerRTS can also detect insider use of a subset of the 960 applications through a unique signature-based detection model.

Among many other enhancements, the new version features a dramatic speed improvement due to performing all packet processing in RAM rather than writing the packet stream to disk which incurs the overhead of disk input and output.

Another key feature is the inclusion of a statistics display that allows the user to actively monitor 50 performance metrics related to the system and the inbound/outbound network traffic stream.

A code signing feature was added to allow our customers to confirm the software was authored by Backbone Security and to guarantee the code has not been altered or corrupted since it was signed.

“Enterprises with sensitive information to protect are vulnerable to the threat from trusted insiders using steganography to steal the crown jewels. Our real-time steganography detection appliance can mitigate that threat.” stated Bart Guerreri, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Backbone Security.

The next version of StegAlyzerRTS will include the capability to manage multiple geographically dispersed scanners from one location. This feature will be of particular interest to enterprises with multiple data centers located anywhere in the world.

StegAlyzerRTS is available for both 100Mbps and 1Gbps networks. For more information please visit www.sarc-wv.com.

About the SARC - The SARC is a Center of Excellence in digital steganography research and development within Backbone Security. The SARC has established the world’s largest commercially available repository of digital steganography applications, fingerprints, and signatures and has developed industry leading computer forensics and network security steganalysis tools for detecting and extracting information hidden with digital steganography applications.

Performance of Backbone’s Gigabit Steganography Detection Appliance Validated

Fairmont, WV September 7, 2011Backbone Security is pleased to announce the results of performance testing on the 1Gbps version of Backbone’s Steganography Analyzer Real-Time Scanner (StegAlyzerRTS) appliance conducted by a faculty-led team from Rochester Institute of Technology’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering.

The testing was designed and conducted to determine the ability of StegAlyzerRTS to detect artifacts and/or signatures of steganography applications within network traffic at a fixed line rate of 1Gbps and varying levels of activity measured as the number of concurrent sessions per second.

Artifacts are files associated with the steganography applications. Detecting an artifact of a steganography application would be an indication the trusted insider who downloaded the application is planning to use it for nefarious purposes such as stealing sensitive information.

Signatures of steganography applications are specific byte patterns left in a carrier file as a byproduct of embedding information in, or appending information to the carrier file. Detecting a signature of a steganography application is an indication the trusted insider used the application to hide sensitive information.

Artifacts would be detected in inbound network traffic with signatures detected in outbound network traffic.

For a wide variety of test conditions, including those with a sustained line rate of 1Gbps and a network load of 8,000 concurrent sessions per second, the StegAlyzerRTS consistently detected 100% of the artifacts presented to it.

“Based on this testing by RIT, we believe our enterprise class customers can be assured our one-of-a-kind real-time steganography detection appliance will handle the traffic on their gigabit networks,” said Bart Guerreri, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Backbone Security.

Government Cyber Crime Organization Issues Validation Report for StegAlyzerRTS

Fairmont, WV June 21, 2011Backbone Security is pleased to announce the Defense Cyber Crime Institute (DCCI), an element of the Department of Defense (DoD) Cyber Crime Center (DC3), has published a Validation Report for Backbone’s Steganography Analyzer Real-Time Scanner (StegAlyzerRTS), a network security appliance for monitoring inbound and outbound network traffic in real-time for the presence of digital steganography applications and signatures.

Digital steganography is the Internet era version of an ancient information hiding technique that dates back to the days of Ancient Greece. Using digital steganography, a file can be embedded within, or appended to, another file in such a way that it cannot be seen or heard. Unlike cryptography, which translates information into an unintelligible sequence of letters and numbers, steganography conceals the very existence of the information.

DCCI provides legally & scientifically accepted standards, techniques, methodologies, research, tools, and technologies on computer forensics and related technologies to meet the current and future needs of the DoD counterintelligence, intelligence, information assurance, information operations, and law enforcement communities.

StegAlyzerRTS was validated by DCCI to determine the extent and circumstances under which computer crime investigating agents assigned to Defense Criminal Investigative Organizations may employ the appliance for digital forensic investigation and analysis.

The Validation Report reflects that expected results were obtained for all tests and all requirements outlined in the report were satisfied. For example, the report indicated that StegAlyzerRTS accurately detected supported steganography applications and did not affect network throughput while capturing and processing copies of all packets entering and leaving the network.

“We are very pleased with the contents of the Validation Report because it reinforces our assertion that StegAlyzerRTS is an effective countermeasure to insider use of steganography to steal sensitive information,” said Bart Guerreri, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Backbone Security.

StegAlyzerRTS was developed in Backbone’s Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC), as a countermeasure to the threat of trusted insiders using digital steganography to exfiltrate sensitive or classified information from enterprise networks.

With more than 1,000 applications available as freeware or shareware on web sites across the Internet, digital steganography is a real and growing threat in the hands of trusted insiders with malicious intent.

For additional information about StegAlyzerRTS or Backbone’s forensic steganalysis tools, please visit the SARC web site at www.sarc-wv.com. To request a copy of the Validation Report, please send email to sarc@backbonesecurity.com or call (877) 560-SARC.

Backbone Announces High Speed Real-Time Steganography Detection System Latest Generation of StegAlyzerRTS Capable of Operating on Networks with Throughput of 1Gbps

December 20, 2010

FAIRMONT, WV - Backbone Security is pleased to announce the availability of a 1Gbps version of their network security appliance for detecting insider use of digital steganography to steal sensitive information.

The Steganography Analyzer Real-time Scanner, StegAlyzerRTS, developed in Backbone's Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC) is the only commercially available real-time steganography detection system in the world. The latest generation of StegAlyzerRTS is capable of operating on networks with throughput of 1Gbps.

Digital steganography is the Internet era version of an information hiding technique that dates back to the days of Ancient Greece. Using digital steganography, a file can be embedded within, or appended to, another file in such a way that it cannot be seen or heard. Unlike cryptography, which translates information into an unintelligible sequence of letters and numbers, steganography conceals the very existence of the information.

One of the many consequences of the economic downturn is that trusted insiders have become more aware of the value of the information they work with on a day-to-day basis than ever before. In some respects, information has become more valuable than money because money, once spent, is gone but information can be sold and resold many times on the burgeoning black market for nearly any type of information.

Insider theft of sensitive information such as Personally Identifiable Information (PII), Protected Health Information (PHI), and intellectual property is increasing at an alarming pace. Insiders can easily find and use any of more than 1,000 steganography applications available as free ware or shareware on web sites across the Internet to steal information.

StegAlyzerRTS can detect insiders downloading any of the 875 digital steganography applications currently in the SARC's archives. Detecting this type of insider activity is an early warning indicator the insider is planning to steal sensitive information. The system can also detect insiders using selected steganography applications through a unique signature-based detection model.

"Any company with significant amounts of sensitive information or intellectual property on their network must be concerned about the threat from insider use of steganography to steal that information," according to Bart Guerreri, Chairman and CEO of Backbone Security. "Our one-of-a-kind turnkey system counters that threat. There's nothing else out there that can do what our system can do in terms of real-time steganography detection and hidden information extraction."

Backbone Security and our worldwide network of business partners are now taking orders.

About the SARC - The SARC is a Center of Excellence in digital steganography research and development within Backbone Security. The SARC has established the worlds largest commercially available repository of digital steganography applications, fingerprints, and signatures and has developed industry leading computer forensics and network security steganalysis tools for detecting and extracting information hidden with digital steganography applications.

Backbone Security Announces Steganography Detection Policy for Fidelis XPS™ Customers
Policy Uses Hash Values from World’s Largest Database of Digital Steganography Applications

Fairmont, WV August 27, 2010Backbone Security, the global leader in digital steganography detection tools, is pleased to announce availability of a Steganography Detection Policy (SDP) for enterprises protected by Fidelis Security Systems’ flagship session-level network security solution, Fidelis XPS™. The SDP gives Fidelis XPS’ customers the capability to detect insiders downloading digital steganography applications on their networks.

Steganography is a method of concealing the existence of data by hiding it within, or appending it to, another file. Unlike encrypting data the way cryptography does, steganography hides the very existence of the data in such a way that it is undetectable under traditional traffic-pattern analysis. Steganography is most often used for malicious purposes such as stealing information or concealing criminal or terrorist activity.

The SDP is based on hash values of file artifacts (“fingerprints”) associated with over 850 steganography applications in the Steganography Application Fingerprint Database (SAFDB) developed in Backbone’s Steganography Analysis and Research Center. SAFDB is the world’s largest commercially available hash set exclusive to digital steganography applications and can be used to determine whether files entering or leaving an enterprise network can be associated with a particular digital steganography application or other data-hiding application.

“With this policy, Fidelis XPS customers can counter the growing threat from insider use of steganography to steal sensitive information such as PHI, PII, or other sensitive information including intellectual property.” said Jim Wingate, Vice President of Backbone and Director of the SARC.

The SDP is available on a monthly or annual subscription basis. Customers can import the policy directly into Fidelis XPS’ CommandPost™ management console, and then distribute the policy to all, or selected, Fidelis XPS sensors.

For additional information, please visit http://www.sarc-wv.com/products/fidelis.aspx. For SDP subscription pricing, please contact the SARC at 877.560.SARC (877.560.7272) or email sarc@backbonesecurity.com.

Backbone Security Teams with Fidelis Security Systems to Provide Further Defense-In-Depth for Evolving Cyber Threats

FAIRMONT, W.Va.
Wed, 28 Apr 2010-- Backbone Security, the global leader in digital steganography detection tools, today announced a partnership with Fidelis Security Systems, the market leader in comprehensive information protection solutions for the prevention of data breaches, to give Fidelis' customers the capability to detect digital steganography applications on their networks.

Steganography is a method of concealing the existence of date by hiding it within another file. Unlike encrypting data the way cryptography does, steganography hides the very existence of the data in such a way that it is undetectable under traditional traffic-pattern analysis. Steganography is most often used for malicious purposes such as stealing information or concealing criminal or terrorist activity. Steganography applications are used to hide information in a file by appending it to, or embedding it within, another file.

Through this partnership and technology integration, Fidelis' flagship session-level network security solution, Fidelis XPS(TM), will be capable of analyzing and detecting steganography applications through Backbone's Steganography Application Fingerprint Database (SAFDB). SAFDB is the world's largest commercially available hash set exclusive to digital steganography applications and can be used to determine whether files traversing the network can be associated with a particular digital steganography or other data-hiding application. Developed in Backbone's Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC), SAFDB contains seven different fingerprints, or hash values, of each file artifact associated with all 812 digital steganography applications in the database.

The joint solution will consist of a set of Fidelis XPS profiles or "fingerprints" derived from SAFDB. Fidelis XPS customers will be able to license the fingerprint set directly from Backbone Security on a subscription basis

"With our data set, Fidelis XPS customers have the capability to counter the growing threat from insider use of steganography to exfiltrate sensitive information." said Jim Wingate, Vice President of Backbone and Director of the SARC. "We are excited to be working with the experts in Fidelis Security Systems who are leading the way in deploying next-generation network security solutions to detect malicious insiders attempting to use steganography to steal sensitive information."

Additionally, Backbone Security has joined the Fidelis Technology Partnership Program which is designed to enable the development of joint solutions that combine Fidelis technology with partners' technologies in support of customer requirements. The program enables Fidelis technology partners to leverage Fidelis' leading-edge technology including sophisticated document decoding, content analysis and policy engines.

"Again, Fidelis XPS is leading the industry as the first and only network security solution capable of detecting the latest in emerging and evolving threats such as steganography applications," said Peter George, CEO of Fidelis Security Systems. "Through this partnership with Backbone Security, we are pleased to be able to give our customers yet another way to protect their most valued information from data exfiltration and defend their networks from threats, whatever their origin."

Backbone Announces Partnership with Paraben Corporation

Fairmont, WV April 19, 2010—Backbone Security, the global leader for digital steganography detection tools, is pleased to announce their partnership with Paraben Corporation. Backbone will utilize Paraben’s virtual image mounting technology commonly known as P2 eXplorer in the steganography detection tools developed in Backbone’s Steganography Analysis & Research Center (SARC).

With P2 eXplorer, digital forensics examiners using either the Steganography Analyzer Artifact Scanner (StegAlyzerAS) or Steganography Analyzer Signature Scanner (StegAlyzerSS) tool can mount forensic images and explore them as though the image was a drive on the examiner’s forensic workstation while preserving the forensic nature of the evidence. In fact, P2 eXplorer is one of the only programs that mount images as both logical and physical disks. This means all the deleted, slack, and unallocated space is accessible. An image isn't just mounted to view logical files; it is mounted as an actual bit-stream image, preserving unallocated, slack, and deleted data.

Backbone Security Announces Next Generation Steganography Detection System

Fairmont, West Virginia—March 12, 2010 – Backbone Security is pleased to announce availability of the next generation of their network security appliance for detecting steganography in real-time.

The Steganography Analyzer Real-time Scanner, StegAlyzerRTS, developed in Backbone’s Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC) is the only commercially available real-time steganography detection system in the world. The latest generation of StegAlyzerRTS is capable of operating on networks with throughput of 100Mbps.

Digital steganography is an Internet era version of an information hiding technique that dates back to the days of Ancient Greece. Using digital steganography, a file can be embedded within, or appended to, another file in such a way that it cannot be seen or heard. Unlike cryptography, which translates information into an unintelligible sequence of letters and numbers, steganography conceals the very existence of the information.

The economic downturn has caused many insiders to become acutely aware of the value of the information they work with on a day-to-day basis. Information has become more valuable than money. Once spent, money is gone but information can be resold many times on the burgeoning black market for nearly any type of information.

One result of the economic downturn is that insider theft of sensitive information is increasing at an alarming pace. Insiders can use any of the 1,000+ steganography applications available on the Internet as freeware or shareware to steal personal identification information or intellectual property, for example. The current generation of network security appliances does not detect insider use of steganography.

StegAlyzerRTS detects insiders downloading any of the 768 digital steganography applications currently in the SARC’s archives. Detecting this type of insider activity is an early warning indicator the insider is planning to steal sensitive information.

The system also has the capability to detect insiders using selected steganography applications through a unique signature-based detection model.

StegAlyzerRTS is available for $14,995.00 from Backbone Security and our business partners worldwide (international reseller pricing may vary).
